The second is Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich Software, which I currently use every night to clone my startup disk twice (I advocate redundancy). You can choose to unlock advanced features, including scheduling, scripting, Smart Updates, and sandboxes for $27.95 if you care to (and you should-scheduling alone is worth the price). The best thing about it (in my humble opinion) is that it’s free, and you can use it to clone your disk for as long as you like at no cost. The first is SuperDuper, from Shirt Pocket.
CARBON COPY CLONER VS SUPERDUPER SOFTWARE
Your Mac doesn’t include cloning software fortunately, I recommend two excellent third-party cloning apps without hesitation. And you didn’t waste a single minute reformatting or replacing the disk, reinstalling macOS, or restoring your data from a backup (all of which you can do when you finish today’s work). Or, if your Mac is completely dead, you can connect your clone disk to almost any other Mac and boot from it.Įither way, just like that you’re back to work with all your apps and files right where you expect them. If your Mac’s startup disk is causing problems, you can simply restart your Mac while holding down the Option key to summon the Startup Manager, and then select your clone disk and click the little arrow below it (or press Return) to boot from it. The bottom line is this: If having your Mac out of service for half a day or more would harm your business or workflow, you need a bootable clone in addition to a traditional backup (or backups). So, it could be hours before you can even attempt to restore your data from a Time Machine (or other) backup, which could take hours itself. You might need to reformat or replace the hard or solid-state disk, and you will almost certainly need to reinstall macOS. Here’s the deal: Time Machine backups are an excellent first step, but if something goes wrong, it could take half a day or longer to get your Mac back up and running. However, for the second item, use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to make bootable backups of your hard drive.Do you back up your Mac? If not, you should, but even if you do, backing up may not provide all the protection you need should disaster strike. I can’t help you with the first item on this list. Keep those drives dispersed in a few different locations. If your files are important, have multiple backup hard drives. You don’t want your loved ones to have to deal with that stuff when they are grieving for you. Make sure that you tell the people you love that you love them. These are two things which are going to happen to you: The incremental backups are a lot quicker. It is copying all the files, and that depending on the size and usage of your internal drive is going to take a while. The first time you backup, it takes a while since SuperDuper is engaged in making a mirror image backup of your internal hard drive to the external hard drive. I run the process at night when I am sleeping. When it finishes, the backup drive is a mirror image of your internal drive.
CARBON COPY CLONER VS SUPERDUPER FULL
Takes a fraction of the time that a full backup would take. What is “smart update?” Only the files added/changed on the hard drive are backed up to the bootable backup drive. I set it to “smart update” my internal drive to an external drive every other week and it does that.

I switched to it sometime in 2015 and it has been working great for me since. Users report that they are happy with the product and it does a good job of backing up their hard drive to a bootable drive. I must admit that I haven’t used Carbon Copy Cloner(CCC) in a long time, I used to, but now I use SuperDuper.
